Doc Waters put his stethoscope back in his black satchel and snapped it shut. âYouâre a very lucky man, Anton Hannack,â he said as he rolled down his sleeves and buttoned the cuffs. âThe ice left by that last big storm is as slippery as the dickens. Iâve got two ladies and one man in town with broken arms or legs from falling just like you did.â
âBut thereâs nothing broken on me, is there, Doktor?â Anton asked, leaning forward eagerly.
âNo, nothing broken,â Doc Waters replied, âbut youâve really strained your back, twisted your knee, and suffered a severely sprained ankle. Itâs bed rest for you for the next week, and then maybe only some light walking about for at least another week after that. If all goes well, you might be able to come to town for Christmas Eve church services.â
He turned to Anna. âIâm depending on you to make sure Anton follows my orders. Otherwise, thereâs no telling what that ornery old coot will try.â
Two weeks. Anna bit back a groan. Anton was all but incapacitated for the next two weeks. But there was nothing that could be done for it. A body needed time to heal, and an elderly body needed even more time.
âIâll do my very best, Doktor,â she said with a tight little smile.
Doc Waters turned to Ian, who stood in the doorway. âIâm glad the Hannacks finally got some sense and hired a hand. This place is just too much for them to manage on their own.â
âIt is a bit of work, to be sure,â Ian replied agreeably.
âWell,ââDoc paused to glance at Anton and AnnaââI guess Iâll be heading back. Mrs. Murphy and Mrs. Schmidt are both expecting their babies soon. I need to stay close to town as much as I can.â
âOne moment, Doktor.â Anna stepped forward, her gaze skittering off Ianâs before meeting Doc Waterâs once more. âThis man has an injury that I thought it best you have a look at.â
Doc Waters turned to Ian. âIs that right, Son? Are you hurt?â
âNay, itâs naught.â As he spoke, Ianâs expression shuttered and became unreadable. âMrs. Hannackâs an excellent nurse, and the woundâs nearly healed. Donât trouble yerself over it.â
âSuit yourself.â The doctor donned his hat and thick woolen coat, then slipped on his gloves. He picked up his bag. âLet me know if you need anything, Anton. If not, Iâll assume no news is good news.â
âJa, Doktor,â the old man replied. âNo news is good news.â
Anna followed Doc Waters out to his horse and buggy. The newfangled automobiles had gained much popularity in the bigger cities and towns, and Wilhelm Wolff, town banker and son of Wolffsburgâs founder, was a proud owner of the only Model T in these parts. Doc Waters, however, claimed to like the dependability of the old-fashioned horse and buggy. Anna couldnât help but agree with him. Tried and true was good enough for her too.
âI was serious back there, Anna.â Doc paused beside his buggy. âAnton has seriously pulled out his back, and his kneeâs in bad shape.
